Camouflage in Achaemenid Royal Guards

There is in our oral history of native Persian tribes that the Achaemenid special army forces had their face covered by the bitumen or the natural soot. The mines were accessible in ground surface where the ancient winter castle of Susa is located.

Why they did it? There are many unique facts about Iranian warriors! Iranians were very versatile in the way of their living or fighting! Today all the armies use soot, or oil color in their face to camouflage their face! Iranian warriors used paint face to show their believe system thousands of years ago, and they covered their face for sun and sands protection, and intimidate their enemies, or to show their ranks ! It could be more reason behind it!

Why they did it? It is not exactly clear - may be for some social, religious or other unknow reasons - no ancient written findings in the stones - but it may involved the strong sunlight protection and/or just a fearsome night battle memorial under the commend of Darrius the Great himself! Persian artists have been careful and passionate about using colors - in their art, and being influenced by the colors of seasonal environment of a specific location on the Achaemenid Satrap governance map!
